The XXXI Camariñas Lace Exhibition of the Provincial Council of A Coruña begins, the edition that signifies the return to normality and the recovery of the identity lost by the pandemic, being held again this year on its traditional date and with the usual format, without restrictions.
The mayor of Camariñas, Sandra Insua, the president of the A Coruña Provincial Council, Valentín González Formoso, the deputy delegate of the Government, María Rivas, and the delegate of the Xunta in A Coruña, Gonzalo Trenor, were in charge of cutting the lace ribbon that symbolically marks the start of the Mostra.
Sandra Insua referred to this recovery of identity and stressed that “Camariñas is once again the fashion capital during Easter, as it should be” since “for any Camariñan or Camariñan, normality does not exist if there is no Mostra during Easter”.
In her speech, the mayor also wanted to highlight the return of the international delegations because “a Mostra without you is less of a Mostra” and took the opportunity to “send from Camariñas a message of unity between peoples, a message of diplomacy, that we are all equal and that borders cannot separate us but must serve to unite us, to collaborate and to exchange knowledge and culture”.
In that sense, he expressed “my solidarity with the Ukrainian people and my strong condemnation of the war” and recalled that “the first Ukrainian families arrived in our municipality. People who leave their entire lives behind from one day to the next for the whims of a few”. “It is unacceptable. I hope that some of these families who are settling in Camariñas will come to the Mostra these days and, for a moment, can forget all the bad things they are doing to their country. You are more than welcome. Surely you will fit into paradise”, he stated, referring to the motto of this thirty-first edition of the Mostra.
For his part, Valentín González Formoso, highlighted that "at the Provincial Council we have been collaborating for three decades to make this Lace Exhibition a point of reference at a national and international level during Easter" and explained that "we do it because we believe that supporting our crafts and our material and intangible heritage is essential to maintaining our identity."
“Because outside and within our borders, saying lace means saying Camariñas. And this is the result of the work of generations of lace makers who have known how to keep the fire of tradition alive in your families”, he stated, adding that “the Lace Exhibition is also tourism and in Camariñas you have many beautiful things to show the thousands of visitors who will pass through here for five days”. “I can tell you that, if it is not paradise, it is very similar to it”, he stressed.
María Rivas described the Mostra as “the most important lace event in the world” and highlighted the “women of Camariñas, you are an example of dedication and you all deserve our recognition”. “I know that you have been working for many years on this Mostra to turn the tradition of this town into art”, she said.
Finally, Gonzalo Trenor highlighted that “three out of five Galician lacemakers reside in Camariñas” and referred to the internationality of lace since “you can find Camariñas lace anywhere in the world”. “Lace is the excuse that attracts visitors to discover that Camariñas is much more than lace but without lace it would not be Camariñas”, he concluded.
After the relevant visit to the different stalls and stands located in the two municipal pavilions prepared for the occasion, the authorities present will witness the 'Pequencaixe' parade and, finally, will attend the inaugural catwalk of the Mostra, in which the participating firms will show for the first time the collections they have prepared for the Mostra with lace as the protagonist.
