During Easter, thread becomes art at the XXXV Lace Exhibition of the Provincial Council of A Coruña

The official inauguration of the event took place today, in which the mayor of Camariñas, the provincial deputy of the region, the delegate and the deputy of the Government, the director of Commerce and Consumption and the director of the Galician Tourism Agency cut the ribbon. In her speech, Sandra Insua, referred to the strength of lace and the palilleiras in unstable contexts for the maritime sector such as the current one, “I know for a fact that palillo was, is and will be an essential economic livelihood for these families”. Insua announced that “the City Council and the palilleiras have been working for a year in a great collaboration with a textile multinational, which shows that lace is absolutely avant-garde”.

The XXXV Camariñas Lace Exhibition of the Provincial Council of A Coruña has begun, an edition that will be held from today, Wednesday, April 1, to Sunday, April 5 and that, with the motto 'Where thread becomes art', seeks to highlight the municipality as the point where the heart of craftsmanship in Galicia beats most strongly.

The mayor of Camariñas, Sandra Insua; the Government delegate, Pedro Blanco; the provincial deputy of the region, Mónica Rodríguez; the general director of Commerce of the Xunta de Galicia, Gabriel Alén; and the director of the Galician Tourism Agency, Xosé Manuel Merelles, were in charge of cutting the lace ribbon that, symbolically, gives the starting signal to the Mostra.

Sandra Insua began her speech by referring to the fact that a date as significant as the thirty-fifth anniversary of the event “opens its doors in a global context that we cannot and should not ignore”. “We are living in turbulent times, surrounded by international instability that, although it may seem distant, affects us in our lives and in our day-to-day lives. The escalation of tension and the war against Iran fill the news with pain and uncertainty. Therefore, from this humble but proud corner of the Atlantic, today I want to take advantage of this loudspeaker to exclaim a clear, resounding and necessary: NO TO WAR”, she exclaimed.

The mayor also wanted to acknowledge the seafarers, who are suffering "a time of immense difficulties for the sector. Our sailors have experienced the anguish of not being able to go out to sea with their boats for long months. And our shellfish gatherers are in a titanic struggle, fighting for our estuary to bear fruit again, while they suffer the injustice of being left out of the announced aid. From here, our recognition and our unconditional support go to each and every one of them. I know for a fact that the fishmonger was, is and will be an essential economic livelihood for these families.".

“Because what our lacemakers do is art, technique and the future. And that future is already bearing great fruit at an industrial level. Today I can announce to you with immense satisfaction that the City Council has been working for a year, hand in hand with our lacemakers, in a great collaboration with a textile multinational known to all. A milestone that shows that Camariñas lace is absolutely avant-garde and a real economic engine. Soon we will be able to tell you more about this alliance that makes us very happy and that once again places a product as artisanal as lace on the international map”, he announced.

He also acknowledged that "none of this would be possible without the constant support of the Provincial Council of A Coruña, to which we thank for their commitment and trust in our culture year after year.".

The Government delegate, Pedro Blanco, commented that “this is an event that improves year after year, consolidating itself as a reference that takes Camariñas further and further” and made a recognition on behalf of the “Government of Spain for everything you are doing here”.

For her part, Mónica Rodríguez indicated that “the Camariñas Lace Show is the cultural event of reference in Galicia every Easter” and recalled that “six years ago we wanted to link the name of the Provincial Council to the event, showing our firm commitment to it”.

Gabriel Alén highlighted that "the artisans who are here, the palilleiras, develop an activity that is culture, tradition, fashion and tourism. You are extraordinary ambassadors of Galicia inside and outside our borders.".

After the relevant visit to the different stalls and stands located in the two municipal pavilions prepared for the occasion, the authorities will witness the inaugural catwalk of the Mostra with the 'Pequencaixe' and 'Grandes Deseñadores' parades in which the participating firms will show for the first time the collections they have prepared for the Mostra with lace as the protagonist.
